C6 Cervical Radiculopathy: What Patients Should Know

Symptoms alone cannot confirm the affected level because nerve territories overlap and problems at the wrist, elbow or shoulder can resemble this pattern. Clinical testing looks for a consistent combination of findings.

C6 symptoms may run from the neck through the outer forearm toward the thumb and sometimes the index finger. Cervical radiculopathy can also present with tingling, reduced sensation or pain that changes with neck position.

Muscle testing may show reduced strength when bending the elbow or extending the wrist. A clinician may also check the biceps and brachioradialis reflexes, compare both arms, and assess whether a hand or peripheral nerve condition better explains the symptoms.

Book an assessment when radiating pain, numbness or weakness continues or interferes with sleep, work or hand use. Record where the symptoms travel, what positions change them, and whether wrist or elbow strength is deteriorating.

Use comfortable positions and temporarily modify tasks that repeatedly trigger symptoms. A care plan may include guided exercise, activity adjustment and medication if suitable. Imaging is generally considered when examination findings, trauma, persistent symptoms or treatment decisions make it relevant.

Get urgent medical help if weakness appears suddenly, clearly worsens, or affects both arms or the legs. New trouble with walking, balance, hand coordination, or bladder or bowel control may indicate spinal cord involvement and should not wait for a routine visit.

Prompt evaluation is also warranted after substantial neck injury or when fever and marked illness accompany neck pain. These red flags determine urgency even though arm tingling can arise from several less urgent causes.

Ask whether the examination fits C6 involvement, whether another nerve could be affected, and how strength will be monitored. Clarify which exercises or work tasks are suitable, when imaging could change management, and what specific change should trigger an earlier follow-up.
