What should you know about C-section stretch marks?

Stretch marks, also called striae, often begin as pink, red, purple, or brown lines and may fade to lighter, less noticeable marks over time. They can occur on the abdomen around a caesarean birth, but they are not caused by the incision itself. A C-section scar is a line where the skin was cut and repaired; it may be raised, sunken, darker, lighter, itchy, or tight while healing. New marks near the scar can therefore be stretch marks, scar changes, or both.

Let the incision heal fully and follow its wound-care advice before considering aesthetic treatment. Moisturising may reduce dryness and tightness but does not remove established marks. Once healing is complete, a dermatologist can assess the colour, texture, scar, skin tone, and breastfeeding or pregnancy plans. Depending on those details, options may include microneedling, RF microneedling, fractional laser treatment, or carboxytherapy. These procedures can require several appointments and may cause temporary redness, swelling, or sensitivity.

Ask for medical review if the incision becomes more painful, warm, red, swollen, or wet, or if it opens. Seek advice for a scar that is rapidly enlarging, very itchy, or restricting movement. Those changes may need treatment as a wound or scar problem rather than an aesthetic procedure.
