C-section leg swelling: what should you know?

After pregnancy and surgery, the body may temporarily hold extra fluid. Swelling can affect both feet or ankles and may be more noticeable after standing. Less commonly, a clot in a deep leg vein causes swelling, warmth, tenderness, or a heavy ache, often in one leg. A clot can travel to the lungs, so the pattern and associated symptoms matter. Keep taking prescribed medicines exactly as directed, and tell your clinician about any new swelling, its location, and when it began. They may examine both legs and decide whether testing is needed.

Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for swelling that is one-sided, rapidly increasing, painful, red, or warm. Seek emergency help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, faintness, or a racing heartbeat. These symptoms can signal a clot complication and should not be watched at home. Swelling with severe headache, vision changes, or markedly high blood pressure also needs urgent assessment after birth.
