Foot swelling after a C-section

Fluid retained during pregnancy does not disappear immediately after birth. Fluids given through a vein around surgery can add temporarily to this volume, while reduced movement allows fluid to settle in the feet and ankles. Swelling that affects both sides and gradually eases without other symptoms can fit this normal postpartum fluid shift.

A different pattern can signal a problem that requires assessment. Pain, tenderness, warmth, redness or noticeably greater swelling in one leg can accompany a blood clot. Postpartum pre-eclampsia may present with raised blood pressure together with symptoms such as a persistent severe headache, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, or swelling of the face or hands.

Take short, gentle walks as your surgical team permits, move your ankles while sitting, and avoid remaining in one position for long periods. Rest with your feet supported, wear non-restrictive footwear, and drink regularly unless a clinician has told you to limit fluids. Follow the personalised instructions you received about compression stockings or blood-thinning medicine; do not start or stop these on your own.

Notice whether swelling is on both sides, whether it is improving, and whether pain or skin changes appear. These details help a midwife or doctor decide whether an examination, blood-pressure check or other assessment is needed.

Seek emergency help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, collapse or a seizure. Obtain urgent same-day assessment for one-sided leg swelling with pain, warmth or redness. Contact your maternity service promptly if swelling is sudden or rapidly increasing, or occurs with a severe headache, vision changes, pain high in the abdomen, vomiting, facial or hand swelling, or feeling very unwell.

Tell the clinician when the swelling began, whether both feet are affected and what makes it change. Ask whether your blood pressure needs checking, how much walking is appropriate after your operation, and whether your prescribed stockings or medicines require any adjustment.
