What the result can mean

CRP can rise when the immune system responds to infection, injury or inflammation. A result can support assessment of conditions such as glandular fever, dengue fever, brucellosis or inflammatory bowel disease, but it does not identify the cause on its own.

A lower result does not rule out every illness, and a raised result does not prove that an infection needs antibiotics. Timing matters because inflammation and the CRP level can change as an illness develops or improves.

What to do with your result

Discuss the result with the clinician who requested it and ask how it fits your symptoms, examination and other blood tests. Mention recent infection, injury, long-term conditions and medicines. Follow the treatment plan and attend any arranged repeat test or review.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, severe chest or abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck with fever, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, you cannot keep fluids down, or your symptoms worsen despite advice.
