What should you know about butt crack yeast infection?

Yeast grows more readily where skin stays warm, damp, and rubbed. The rash may be red, itchy, sore, or moist, sometimes with smaller spots near its edges. Those features are not unique to yeast. Irritant dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, bacterial infection, and a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes can resemble it.

A clinician may call yeast inflammation in a skin fold candidal intertrigo. Sweating, tight clothing, prolonged dampness, recent antibiotics, diabetes, and reduced immune function can make overgrowth easier. A rash confined to the buttock crease is not the same as vaginal thrush, although both can involve Candida yeast.

The exact location and appearance matter. Cracking, drainage, a bad smell, blisters, marked tenderness, or a rash extending beyond the fold can point toward another diagnosis or an added bacterial infection. An examination, and occasionally a skin sample, can clarify the cause when the pattern is uncertain.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or an unperfumed cleanser, pat the crease fully dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and choose loose, breathable underwear. Avoid fragranced wipes and vigorous scrubbing because both can worsen inflamed skin. Do not share towels while the cause is unclear.

Avoid using a steroid cream by itself on an undiagnosed rash, as it can mask or aggravate some infections. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, open sores, fever, or pain that is becoming severe. These can signal a bacterial infection or another problem requiring different treatment.
