Buscopan and acid reflux: what to know

Buscopan is an antispasmodic used for certain painful muscle spasms in the digestive tract. Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe, causing burning, sour fluid, belching, throat irritation, or chest discomfort. Because the mechanisms differ, Buscopan is not a substitute for treatment aimed at reflux. Abdominal pain may have more than one cause, and reflux can coexist with a hiatus hernia or other digestive problem. The medicine may also be unsuitable for some people, so personal health conditions and other medicines matter.

Read the product directions and use Buscopan only as advised by a pharmacist or clinician. Tell them about glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, bowel blockage, pregnancy, and regular medicines before taking it. For reflux symptoms, stay upright after meals, choose smaller portions, and note foods or drinks that trigger burning. Do not keep treating unexplained pain at home when it is new, worsening, or repeatedly returning. A clinician can match treatment to the actual cause.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent chest tightness, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, or sudden severe abdominal pain. Arrange review if reflux causes repeated night waking, trouble swallowing, ongoing cough, or symptoms that do not settle with sensible measures. Seek advice promptly if Buscopan causes eye pain, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or difficulty urinating.

Ask whether your pain sounds like a spasm, reflux, or another condition; whether Buscopan is appropriate with your health history; and what treatment addresses the acid. Mention any Chest Tightness, Cough, or Difficulty Sleeping and describe when each symptom appears.
