What should you know about bursitis wrist?

Short answer

Wrist bursitis is irritation of a small cushioning sac near the wrist, causing local pain, tenderness, and sometimes visible swelling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
A small cushioning sac close to the wrist joint
Common pattern
Focused tenderness that worsens with pressure or certain movements
Assessment helps
Tendon, joint, cyst, ligament, and bone problems can feel similar

The short answer

It may follow repeated pressure, repetitive hand use, or a direct knock. Because several wrist conditions feel similar, a clinician may need to confirm which tissue is producing the symptoms.

What the symptoms can mean

The discomfort is often focused over a small area and may worsen when the wrist presses against a surface or moves in a particular direction. Tenderness and a soft swelling can occur near a superficial bursa. Pain may interfere with gripping, lifting, typing, or pushing up from a chair.

Wrist pain or swelling can also come from a tendon sheath, joint inflammation, a ganglion cyst, a ligament injury, or a fracture. Numbness, tingling, weakness, catching, or pain after a fall may point away from uncomplicated bursitis and helps the clinician choose the examination or imaging needed.

Ways to reduce irritation

Temporarily adjust tasks that press on the sore spot or repeatedly bend the wrist. Change hand position, take regular movement breaks, and keep light, comfortable wrist motion instead of holding it completely still for long periods. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may help after an aggravating activity.

A wrist support may be useful for selected tasks, but fit and timing matter because unnecessary immobilisation can add stiffness. A clinician or physiotherapist can check movement, strength, work setup, and technique. Medicines are not suitable for everyone, particularly with stomach, kidney, heart, bleeding, allergy, or pregnancy concerns, so check with a pharmacist or clinician before use.

When the wrist needs medical care

Get prompt medical advice if the wrist becomes hot and red, swelling spreads, fluid drains from the skin, or you develop fever or chills. Infection around a bursa or joint requires assessment and may need treatment beyond symptom relief.

Seek urgent care after a substantial fall or blow when there is deformity, intense pain, loss of movement, or fingers that become pale, blue, cold, or numb. Book a routine assessment when symptoms keep returning, disrupt sleep or daily tasks, or fail to improve after reducing the provoking activity.

What to ask at an appointment

Describe the exact tender spot, activities that trigger it, any injury, and whether swelling changes through the day. Ask whether the bursa, tendon, joint, nerve, or bone seems involved; whether a support or exercise plan is appropriate; and what findings would make an injection, fluid sampling, or imaging useful.

Questions people ask

Can wrist bursitis cause a lump?

A superficial irritated bursa may produce a soft, tender swelling, but wrist lumps have several possible causes. Avoid pressing or puncturing it and arrange an assessment if it persists or changes.

Should I exercise a sore wrist?

Gentle movement that does not sharply increase pain can help maintain mobility. Pause forceful gripping, loaded wrist positions, and movements that repeatedly aggravate the exact area until the cause is clearer.

When might fluid be removed from wrist swelling?

A clinician may consider fluid sampling when confirming the cause would alter treatment, particularly if infection or crystal-related inflammation is a concern. It should be performed with appropriate clinical precautions.
