Bursitis of the Left Trochanteric Bursa

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Left trochanteric bursitis is irritation around the bursa beside the outer hip, often causing tenderness and pain with pressure or movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical area
The bony outside of the left hip and nearby upper thigh
Common aggravators
Side-lying pressure, stairs, prolonged walking, and single-leg loading
Assessment focus
Tenderness, hip strength, gait, back symptoms, and joint movement

The short answer

Pain may be noticeable when lying on the left side, climbing stairs, walking farther than usual, or rising from a low seat. Symptoms can overlap with tendon, joint, or lower-back problems, so location alone does not confirm the diagnosis.

What the diagnosis means

The trochanteric bursa is a small, fluid-filled cushion near the bony prominence on the outside of the thigh bone. Irritation in this area belongs to a broader group of outer-hip pain problems that may also involve the nearby gluteal tendons.

A clinician may check exactly where the hip is tender, how the pelvis moves during standing and walking, and whether the back or hip joint reproduces the pain. Visible joint swelling is not required for trochanteric bursitis, because the irritated tissue lies beneath several layers around the hip.

What you can do now

Temporarily reduce movements that sharply provoke the left outer hip, while keeping comfortable daily movement. Avoid sleeping directly on that side; a pillow between the knees when lying on the right can reduce pull across the left hip. Do not lean the hip against a desk or stand with most weight dropped onto one leg.

Physiotherapy may address hip strength, walking mechanics, and a gradual return to activity. A clinician can advise whether anti-inflammatory medication is appropriate after considering stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, allergy, and medicine-interaction concerns. A cortisone injection may be discussed when targeted conservative care has not settled symptoms, but it is not automatically needed.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an assessment if the pain persists, repeatedly interrupts sleep, limits walking, or follows a fall. Seek urgent care for inability to bear weight after injury, a visibly deformed hip, rapidly increasing redness or warmth, fever with severe hip pain, or new leg weakness or numbness.

Prompt review is also sensible when pain is unexplained and worsening, or when you are unwell or immunocompromised. These features can point to a problem other than routine bursal irritation and should not be managed only with home measures.

Useful questions for your appointment

Ask whether the tenderness appears to come from the bursa, the gluteal tendons, the hip joint, or the lower back. You can also ask which activities to modify, which strengthening movements fit your examination, whether imaging would change management, and what response should trigger follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can I keep walking with left trochanteric bursitis?

Comfortable walking is often reasonable, but shorten the distance or pace if pain rises during the walk or remains more irritated afterward. A gradual increase is preferable to repeatedly pushing through sharp pain.

Does left trochanteric bursitis require an injection?

No. Activity adjustment and an individual rehabilitation plan may be enough. A clinician may consider a cortisone injection after examining the hip and discussing expected benefits, limitations, and personal risks.

Why does lying on my left side hurt?

Direct pressure compresses the sensitive tissues over the outer hip. Changing sides and placing a pillow between the knees can reduce local compression and tension.
