Bursitis on the inner side of the knee

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Bursitis on the inner knee often involves the pes anserine bursa below the joint and causes focused tenderness with activity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical structure
Pes anserine bursa
Typical location
Inner upper shin, below the knee joint line
Common aggravators
Stairs, running and repeated knee bending

What is bursitis inside the knee?

This bursa reduces friction where several tendons attach to the upper shinbone. Pain is usually felt on the inner side of the knee rather than deep in the centre of the joint.

What the location can tell you

Pes anserine bursitis can produce a tender spot a short distance below the inner joint line. Stairs, running, rising from a chair or lying with the knees touching may aggravate it. The discomfort may build after a change in training, repeated knee bending or altered walking mechanics.

Inner-knee pain can also arise from a tendon, ligament, meniscus or arthritis. An examination checks the precise tender area, knee stability, movement and whether symptoms come from the joint itself. Imaging is reserved for situations where the diagnosis remains uncertain or another problem is suspected.

Measures that may help

Temporarily reduce movements that repeatedly trigger the pain while continuing comfortable daily motion. A wrapped cold pack can be applied for short periods, with fabric protecting the skin. Footwear, training load and hip or thigh strength may also need attention.

A physiotherapist can guide gradual strengthening and flexibility work without repeatedly compressing the sore area. Anti-inflammatory medication may suit some people after contraindications are checked. If symptoms persist despite appropriate rehabilitation, a clinician may discuss a targeted cortisone injection after excluding infection and other causes.

When an examination is needed

Book an assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, interferes with walking, or follows a notable injury. Seek urgent care when the knee is hot and red with fever, cannot bear weight, looks deformed, locks after injury, or swells rapidly.

Pain or swelling in the calf, especially with breathlessness or chest pain, also requires urgent evaluation because it may not be bursitis.

Useful questions at your appointment

Ask which structure is tender, whether your activities or walking pattern contribute, and which exercises match the suspected cause. Clarify whether medicine is safe with your health conditions and what finding would justify imaging or an injection.

Questions people ask

Is inner-knee bursitis the same as a meniscus injury?

No. They involve different tissues, although their pain can overlap. The exact tender point, injury history and examination help separate them.

Should I stop exercising completely?

Usually, activity is modified rather than stopped entirely. Avoid movements that clearly flare the pain and use a gradual rehabilitation plan to restore capacity.

Is aspiration commonly used for inner-knee bursitis?

Not routinely. This bursa is relatively deep, and aspiration is generally considered only when the diagnosis or presence of infection needs clarification.
