Bursitis and Pain in the Outer Thigh

Short answer
Outer-thigh bursitis usually refers to irritation of a bursa beside the hip, causing tenderness and pain that may spread down the thigh.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- The bony outer side of the hip, sometimes extending down the outer thigh
- Common aggravators
- Side-lying, stairs, longer walks, and repeated hip loading
- Diagnosis
- Based mainly on symptoms and a physical examination
The short answer
Pain may be worse when lying on that side, climbing stairs, walking for longer than usual, or rising from a chair. Because tendon irritation, back problems, and hip-joint disorders can feel similar, the location of pain alone cannot confirm bursitis.
Where the discomfort comes from
A bursa is a small, fluid-containing cushion that reduces friction where soft tissue moves over bone. On the outer side of the hip, it lies close to the prominent upper end of the thigh bone. Irritation there can create a sore point at the hip and an ache along the outer thigh; it does not mean the thigh muscle itself contains an inflamed bursa.
A clinician may check hip movement, the exact tender area, walking pattern, back symptoms, and muscle strength. Imaging is not needed in every case, but it may help when the diagnosis is unclear or an injury is suspected.
Ways to reduce irritation
Temporarily reduce movements that reliably provoke the pain, avoid sleeping directly on the sore side, and place a pillow between the knees when lying on the other side. Comfortable activity is generally preferable to complete rest. A physiotherapist can address hip strength, movement control, and a gradual return to walking or exercise.
Cold or warmth may be used according to comfort. Anti-inflammatory medicine is not suitable for everyone, particularly people with certain stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, or medication considerations. If symptoms persist, a clinician may discuss an injection after confirming the likely pain source.
When medical assessment matters
Arrange an assessment if pain is worsening, keeps returning, interferes with sleep or walking, or follows a fall. Seek urgent care for fever with a hot, red, rapidly swelling area; inability to bear weight; a visibly deformed hip; new leg weakness or numbness; or loss of bladder or bowel control. These features can point to infection, fracture, or nerve compression rather than uncomplicated bursitis.
Useful questions for your appointment
Ask which structure seems to be painful, whether hip tendons or the lower back could be involved, which activities you should modify, and what exercises fit your examination. If an injection is proposed, ask what diagnosis it is intended to treat and what follow-up is planned.

Questions people ask
Can outer-thigh bursitis cause pain below the hip?
Yes. Irritation near the outer hip can produce aching that travels along the outside of the thigh, although pain reaching the foot or accompanied by numbness suggests another source should also be considered.
Should I stop walking?
Not necessarily. Shorten or slow walks if they provoke pain, then build activity gradually as symptoms settle. Inability to bear weight needs prompt assessment.
