Elbow Bursitis and Gout

Gout occurs when urate crystals trigger inflammation. Crystals can collect in the olecranon bursa, the small cushion over the pointed bone at the back of the elbow. The swelling may feel soft or tense, and longer-standing deposits can feel firm or lumpy.

Redness, warmth, pain, and swelling can occur with gout, but those same features can accompany an infected bursa. Having gout does not exclude infection. A clinician uses the history, skin findings, examination, and sometimes a fluid sample to separate these possibilities.

Rest the elbow from direct pressure and avoid leaning on hard surfaces. A wrapped cold pack may reduce discomfort. Do not puncture the swelling. Medicine for an acute gout flare must suit kidney function, stomach health, allergies, and other prescriptions, so follow an individual treatment plan.

After the flare settles, review long-term gout management if attacks recur or deposits are present. A clinician may discuss urate-lowering treatment, adherence to existing prescriptions, and triggers specific to you. Do not stop a regular gout medicine during a flare unless the prescriber tells you to do so.

Get prompt care if fever, chills, broken skin, drainage, spreading redness, or rapidly worsening pain develops. Urgent review is also appropriate if you cannot move the elbow after an injury, the hand becomes weak or numb, or you feel very unwell. Assessment should address these warning signs directly rather than assuming every episode is gout.

Ask whether fluid testing would distinguish crystals from infection, which medicine is safest with your other health conditions, and whether the swelling represents a firm urate deposit. Confirm how to protect the elbow at work and when follow-up urate testing or medication review is appropriate.
