Bursitis Around the Knee: Symptoms, Care and Warning Signs

Bursae reduce friction where skin, tendons and other tissues move over bone. Around the knee, irritation may develop over the kneecap or on the inner side below the joint. Repeated kneeling, a direct knock, a sudden increase in activity or pressure on the area can aggravate one of these cushions.

The discomfort is often quite local: the spot may feel tender or look puffy, while kneeling, bending or climbing stairs can provoke pain. The pattern matters because arthritis, tendon problems, infection and an injury inside the joint may also cause knee pain or swelling.

Pause kneeling and any movement that repeatedly compresses the sore point. A wrapped cold pack can be applied for short periods, and a knee pad or cushioned surface may help when kneeling cannot be avoided. Keep the knee moving gently within a comfortable range rather than forcing deep bends.

If symptoms persist, a clinician can locate the tender bursa and check whether swelling is superficial or within the joint. Treatment may include activity changes, physiotherapy and, when suitable for your health history, anti-inflammatory medicine. Aspiration or an injection is considered only after assessing the cause and excluding infection where relevant.

Seek urgent medical care if the area becomes hot, red or rapidly more swollen, especially with fever, chills, drainage or feeling unwell. These features can accompany infection. Prompt assessment is also appropriate after a significant injury, if you cannot bear weight, if the knee locks, or if pain and swelling extend into the calf.

Arrange a routine appointment when symptoms keep returning, interfere with walking or sleep, or do not improve after reducing pressure. Mention skin breaks near the swelling, recent procedures and medicines that affect immunity or bleeding.

Ask which bursa appears irritated, whether the fluid is outside the joint, which activities you should modify and when you can resume kneeling or exercise. You can also ask whether imaging or fluid testing would change management and which exercises fit the exact location of your pain.
