Bursa sac inflammation: symptoms, care, and warning signs

It often hurts with direct pressure or movement around the area. Treatment depends on the location and whether the trigger is repeated loading, injury, an inflammatory condition, crystal disease, or infection.

Bursae sit at friction points between structures such as skin, bone, tendons, and muscles. When irritated, the lining can produce extra fluid and become sensitive. Superficial bursae may form an obvious soft swelling, while deeper ones may cause pain without a visible lump.

Bursitis can present with warmth, limited comfortable movement, and focal tenderness. Those findings can overlap with tendon or joint problems, so an examination considers exactly where the pain sits and which movement or pressure reproduces it.

Reduce the provoking pressure or repeated movement, protect the area with appropriate padding, and maintain comfortable movement instead of repeatedly testing the painful action. A wrapped cool pack may ease a recent flare; protect the skin and stop if it causes burning or numbness.

Depending on medical history and the suspected cause, care may include rehabilitation or anti-inflammatory medication. A cortisone injection can be an option in selected non-infected cases. Joint aspiration or aspiration of a superficial swelling may help answer a specific diagnostic question, but needles should only be used in a suitable clinical setting.

Seek same-day advice for a hot, red, rapidly enlarging swelling, drainage, fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell because infection needs prompt assessment. Urgent review is also appropriate after major trauma, when a limb cannot support weight or function normally, or when severe pain escalates quickly.
