Burping and chest tightness

Reflux can cause burning or pressure after meals, with a sour taste or regurgitation. Trapped air may feel like fullness and may ease after passing wind or burping. Asthma and COPD can cause chest symptoms with cough, wheeze or breathlessness; anxiety or panic can bring tightness with fast breathing, trembling or a racing heartbeat. Angina is a heart-related cause that may appear with exertion and spread to the arm, jaw or back. These patterns overlap, so chest tightness cannot safely be explained by burping alone.

Stop exertion, sit upright and notice whether symptoms began after food, activity or emotional stress. Do not drive yourself if the tightness is severe or you feel unwell. Use an inhaler only as prescribed; do not borrow someone else’s treatment. Arrange a clinical review for recurring episodes, particularly if they occur with exertion or breathing changes.

Call emergency services for severe, new or persistent chest tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, blue lips, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Urgent assessment is also needed when symptoms follow exertion or do not settle with rest. Do not wait to see whether burping relieves a concerning episode.
