Burning throat and cough

A common cold or acute bronchitis can make the throat raw while the airways produce a cough. Allergic rhinitis may cause mucus to drain from the nose into the throat. Acid reflux can trigger a dry cough and burning, especially after meals or overnight. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness. Less common airway conditions, including bronchiectasis or bronchiolitis, need clinical assessment when cough is persistent, wet, or associated with breathing changes. Chronic cough has many possible causes.

Sip water, use soothing warm drinks, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Rest if you have an infection pattern and consider a humidified room if dry air aggravates the throat. Note whether the cough is dry or produces mucus, and whether it follows meals, exercise, or lying down. A pharmacist or clinician can guide cough treatment, inhaler review, or reflux care based on your other symptoms.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Seek prompt review for wheezing, dehydration, a high temperature with worsening illness, repeated night symptoms, or a cough that persists or keeps returning. Children with breathing difficulty, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or worsening symptoms should be assessed urgently.
