Burning Eyes and Headache: What to Know

Burning eyes with headache can occur with allergy, sinus irritation, infection, dehydration, heat, or visual strain. Watery or itchy eyes suggest irritation, while blocked nose, facial pressure, or fever may point toward an upper-airway illness. The severity, speed of onset, and changes in vision affect how urgently you need care.

Allergic rhinitis can cause itchy, burning, watery eyes with sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. Chronic sinusitis may cause facial pressure, nasal blockage, and headache. A common cold or COVID-19 can bring headache with tiredness, congestion, sore throat, or fever. Dehydration and heat exhaustion may add thirst, dizziness, weakness, or heavy sweating. Anxiety can contribute to head discomfort and eye strain, particularly after prolonged screen use, but sudden or severe symptoms need a physical assessment.

Rest in a cool, comfortable place and drink fluids. Take breaks from screens, reduce glare, and avoid rubbing your eyes. A cool clean compress may soothe irritation. Consider recent heat exposure, allergy triggers, illness contacts, and nasal symptoms when describing the problem. Seek advice before using medicated eye drops, especially if you wear contact lenses or have eye disease.

Get emergency help for sudden severe headache, loss or marked change of vision, a very painful red eye, weakness, confusion, fainting, stiff neck, or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is needed after an eye injury, with severe light sensitivity, or when fever and worsening headache occur together. Heat-related confusion or collapse is an emergency.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, sinus disease, infection, dehydration, or an eye problem; whether vision and eye pressure should be checked; and which symptoms require same-day care.
