Burning, Cloudy, Smelly Urine: What to Know

Burning, cloudy, or strong-smelling urine may point to urinary irritation, dehydration, or a urinary tract infection. Cloudiness can come from cells, mucus, crystals, or concentrated urine, while odor may change with fluids, foods, or infection. The combination of pain and urine changes is worth monitoring rather than ignoring.

A urinary tract infection can cause burning when passing urine, frequent or urgent trips to the toilet, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy urine, or a strong smell. A kidney infection may present with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling markedly unwell. Dehydration can make urine darker and more concentrated, sometimes increasing its smell, but it does not explain every cause of burning. Vaginal discharge or irritation can also affect how symptoms are noticed and should be mentioned during an assessment.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid delaying urination. Keep track of frequency, colour, smell, pain, fever, and any side or back pain. Arrange medical advice if burning continues, symptoms recur, or you have risk factors such as pregnancy, diabetes, a urinary catheter, or a weakened immune system. A urine test may help guide treatment.

Seek urgent care for fever with urinary symptoms, shaking chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or difficulty passing urine. Blood in the urine, severe pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms also needs prompt assessment. Kidney infection can become serious, so do not wait for it to settle when you feel systemically unwell.
