Burning and Itching Skin: What It Can Mean and What to Do

Short answer
Burning and itching skin can result from irritation, dryness, inflammation, infection, or an allergic reaction, so the pattern and accompanying changes matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptoms may mean
Dry, cracked skin can sting and itch, especially after frequent washing or exposure to dry air. Contact dermatitis can follow contact with a cleanser, fragrance, cosmetic, plant, or metal. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can cause recurring itch with inflamed or scaly areas. Scabies often causes intense itch and may affect household contacts. Hives produce raised, changing itchy patches, while a yeast infection tends to affect warm, moist folds. These conditions can look alike, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
What you can do now
Rinse away a suspected irritant and pause newly introduced skin products. Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser on intact skin. Keep nails short and use a cool, damp cloth instead of scratching. Loose clothing can reduce friction. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or numbing products to a spreading or uncertain rash without medical advice, because the wrong treatment can mask the pattern or worsen some infections.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, rapidly spreading hives, severe skin pain, blistering, or skin peeling. Arrange prompt assessment if the area is hot, increasingly swollen, draining, or accompanied by fever. A clinician should also review persistent, widespread, recurrent, or sleep-disrupting itch, particularly when there is no visible rash.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, hives, scabies, or an infection? Which products should I stop or continue? Would you examine a skin scraping or prescribe a targeted treatment? What changes should make me return sooner?

When does itching need assessment?
Arrange an assessment when itching is widespread, persistent, recurrent, sleep-disrupting, or associated with swelling, fever, pain, blisters, or drainage.
