Body itching at night: causes and next steps

Short answer
Body itching at night can reflect dry or inflamed skin, an infestation, or another condition that needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nights can feel worse
Warm bedding, sweating, dry air, and reduced daytime distraction can make an itch feel stronger at bedtime. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, Psoriasis, and Contact Dermatitis may cause persistent or patchy irritation. Scabies often causes intense nighttime itching and may affect close contacts, with small bumps or tracks in typical areas. Itching without a visible rash can also have causes outside the skin, so duration and associated symptoms matter.
Ways to settle the skin
Keep the bedroom comfortably cool, use breathable sleepwear, and apply a plain moisturiser after a lukewarm wash. Keep fingernails short and press or cool an itchy area instead of scratching. Wash bedding regularly if an infestation is possible, and avoid sharing towels until assessed. Note the locations, visible changes, sleep disruption, and whether anyone else is itchy. A clinician can examine the skin and select treatment based on the pattern.
When to arrange care
Seek prompt review for broken or infected-looking skin, severe sleep loss, widespread rash, or itching that persists despite gentle skin care. Arrange earlier assessment when household members itch, new medicines preceded the symptoms, or the skin is yellow, very pale, bruised, or unusually painful. Get urgent help for breathing trouble or sudden facial, lip, tongue, or throat swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the distribution fits Scabies or eczema, whether close contacts need assessment, and which nighttime treatment is appropriate for your skin and medicines.
