What should you know about burn scar revision?

A healed burn may leave a scar that is raised, indented, tight, itchy, darker, lighter, or attached to deeper tissue. Revision is a planned dermatology or surgical treatment intended to improve a specific problem; it does not erase the history of the injury. A clinician will examine the scar’s thickness, flexibility, colour, and effect on nearby joints or facial movement.

Fractional laser treatment may help remodel selected scar tissue and improve texture. Scar revision surgery can release or reshape a restrictive scar. A skin graft may be considered when resurfacing or replacing a larger area is needed. These options may be combined or staged.

Arrange an assessment once the wound is fully closed and the scar is stable enough to examine. Bring details about the original burn, previous operations, dressings, infections, and changes in movement. Protect the area from sun, avoid picking or harsh products, and use only scar products advised for your skin. Discuss expected healing, dressings, anaesthesia, pigment changes, and whether more than one treatment may be needed.

Seek prompt medical care if a scar becomes newly painful, warm, swollen, rapidly larger, draining, or associated with fever. Arrange an assessment sooner if tightening limits a joint, eyelid, mouth, or neck, or if the area repeatedly cracks or bleeds. A changing sore within an old scar also needs examination.

Ask which feature is being treated, whether laser, surgery, or grafting fits the scar, how movement may change, what aftercare involves, and how recurrence or pigment alteration will be monitored.
