What should you know about a red burn scar?

Scar redness may be part of normal maturation, especially while the tissue is raised, firm or itchy. It can also be related to irritation from rubbing, heat or a product. Redness that is spreading, hot or increasingly tender is different from a stable mark and can signal inflammation or infection. A clinician can assess the colour alongside the scar’s surface and symptoms.

Keep the healed area protected from friction and use only gentle cleansing and clinician-approved moisturising. Do not massage an open or infected-looking wound. Photographing the scar in consistent light can help you notice change. If redness persists or the scar is raised, a dermatologist may discuss fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery or other scar care; a skin graft is considered when the burn left substantial skin loss.

Seek prompt medical help for redness that expands, heat, worsening pain, swelling, pus-like drainage, fever, red streaks or skin separation. Arrange a routine review if itch, firmness or tightness is interfering with sleep, clothing or movement. Do not wait for cosmetic treatment if the scar is breaking down.
