What should you know about burn mark scar?

A superficial burn may heal with a colour change, while a deeper injury can produce a tight, shiny, uneven, or raised scar. Itching, sensitivity, dryness and altered feeling can occur around the healed area. Scar tissue does not stretch like uninjured skin, so a scar near a finger, elbow, knee, mouth, or neck can interfere with movement. Appearance often evolves gradually, and the final texture cannot be judged while the wound is still open.

Keep a healed scar moisturised, avoid picking, and shield it from sunlight with clothing or suitable sunscreen. A clinician may recommend scar massage only after the surface is fully healed. Treatment depends on depth, location, colour, thickness and tightness. Fractional laser treatment may improve texture in selected scars. Scar revision surgery can reshape a troublesome area, while a skin graft may be considered when there is significant tissue loss or tightness. Seek medical care if the area remains open, develops pus, spreading redness, increasing warmth, fever, or worsening pain. Arrange review when a scar becomes tighter, cracks with movement, restricts a joint, or changes unexpectedly after being stable. Urgent assessment is appropriate for a burn involving the face, hands, major joints, genitals, or a large area, especially when function is affected.
