Budesonide is a corticosteroid: what that means

It is not the same as the anabolic steroids associated with muscle building. Budesonide may be supplied for inhalation, the nose or the digestive tract. Products are not interchangeable because they deliver medicine to different tissues and release it in different ways.

Budesonide acts through corticosteroid receptors to dampen inflammatory signals. Delivering it close to the affected airway, nasal lining or bowel can concentrate treatment there, although some medicine may still enter the bloodstream.

Side effects depend on the route, dose, length of use and other steroid exposure. Inhaled products can cause a sore mouth, hoarse voice or oral thrush. Longer or higher exposure can affect infection response, eyes, bones, blood sugar or the body's own steroid production.

Check the label and demonstration for your inhaler, nebuliser, nasal spray, capsule, tablet or rectal preparation. Take it on schedule and do not swap formulations. After an inhaled dose, rinse your mouth and spit out the water; correct technique improves delivery and reduces medicine left in the mouth.

Do not stop regular budesonide abruptly without prescriber advice, particularly after extended use or when taking other corticosteroids. Tell clinicians and pharmacists about every steroid medicine you use, including creams and injections, so total exposure and interactions can be considered.

Get emergency help for swelling of the face or throat, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening wheeze immediately after inhalation. An inhaled controller is not a substitute for prescribed rescue treatment during a sudden breathing attack.

Contact the prescriber for persistent mouth patches, fever or signs of infection, new vision problems, severe mood changes, black stools, or symptoms that worsen despite correct use. Vomiting or inability to keep an oral dose down may also require specific sick-day advice.

Ask what the budesonide is treating, when benefit should be noticeable, how to demonstrate correct technique and what to do after a missed dose. Discuss whether monitoring is needed, which symptoms suggest infection or excess steroid exposure, and how any dose reduction would be managed.
