What should you know about bubbly dark urine?

Urine can look darker after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply drinking less fluid. Fast flow into the toilet can also create temporary bubbles. Foam that remains after flushing, returns repeatedly, or appears with swelling around the eyes or ankles can reflect protein in the urine and should be checked. Tea-coloured urine with yellow skin, pale stools, nausea, or upper abdominal discomfort can occur with liver or bile-flow problems, including Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion are especially relevant after time outdoors in hot weather.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and notice whether the colour becomes lighter. Check the next few urine samples in good light rather than judging one sample alone. Arrange a medical review if the bubbles persist, the urine stays dark despite drinking, or you notice burning, fever, flank pain, blood, swelling, or reduced urination. A clinician may test urine and blood to look at kidney function, infection, and liver-related changes.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, yellow skin with worsening illness, or severe abdominal or flank pain. These signs can accompany significant dehydration, heat-related illness, infection, or another problem needing prompt treatment.

Ask whether you need a urine test, which medicines or supplements could change urine colour, and how much fluid is suitable for you. Mention recent heat exposure, stomach illness, exercise, pain, swelling, or changes in bowel colour.
