What should you know about bubbly cloudy urine?

Bubbles may appear when urine hits the water quickly or when it is concentrated. Cloudiness can arise from crystals, mucus, skin cells or inflammation. With a urinary tract infection, cloudiness may accompany burning, urgency, frequent trips to the toilet, lower abdominal pain or an unusual smell. Kidney infection can involve fever, chills, nausea and pain in the flank or back. These symptoms are more informative than appearance alone.

Check the appearance again at another visit to the toilet and consider whether you have been drinking less than usual, sweating heavily or unwell. Drink normally unless a clinician has prescribed fluid restriction. Book an appointment when the change keeps returning or is joined by pain, burning, blood, fever or altered urine output. A urine test can help distinguish infection from other causes.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, have severe side or back pain, repeated vomiting, high fever, confusion, faintness or visible blood in the urine. A possible kidney infection needs timely assessment, particularly during pregnancy or when immunity is reduced. Worsening symptoms should not be explained away by dehydration alone.

Tell your clinician when the bubbles or cloudiness began, whether they clear quickly, and which urinary or general symptoms occur with them. Ask whether you need a clean-catch urine sample, how results will be followed up and which warning signs require same-day care.
