What should you know about bubbles and cloudy urine?

A forceful stream can briefly create bubbles, while dehydration can make urine darker and more concentrated. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, cells or inflammation. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudiness together with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort or an unusual smell. Kidney infection can cause fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change settles after drinking normally and whether it happens repeatedly. Do not force large amounts of fluid if you have been told to restrict fluids. Arrange a medical review if cloudiness persists, returns often, or comes with burning, urgency, blood, pain or a change in urine amount. A clinician may ask for a clean urine sample and decide whether further checks are needed.

Get urgent medical advice for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, feeling faint, visible blood, inability to pass urine or rapidly worsening illness. These features can indicate a kidney or urinary problem that needs prompt treatment. Pregnancy, childhood, older age or a weakened immune system can change how quickly symptoms should be assessed.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dehydration, a urinary tract infection or another cause, how to collect the urine sample, and which changes should prompt urgent reassessment. Mention new medicines, supplements, discharge or recent urinary procedures.
