BTS gait analysis explained

BTS refers to a family of laboratory systems rather than a diagnosis. Depending on the setup, cameras track body markers, floor sensors record loading, and surface sensors may measure when selected muscles switch on. A clinician combines those signals with your history and physical examination.

The report can describe joint angles, stride timing, symmetry, foot pressure and forces passing through the ground. It may clarify whether a visible limp comes from pain avoidance, stiffness, weakness, balance difficulty or a learned movement strategy.

An unusual graph is not automatically harmful. Meaning depends on symptoms, goals, age, mobility aids and the reason for testing. Results are most useful when they answer a defined clinical question and can change a treatment decision.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the clinician to see relevant joints and bring the shoes, brace, walking aid or orthotics you normally use. Explain where symptoms occur, what activities provoke them, any falls, previous surgery and what you hope to regain.

You may be asked to repeat several walks at a natural pace so enough clean recordings can be collected. Follow the laboratory's instructions about skin products because adhesive markers or muscle sensors need secure contact. Tell staff immediately if testing causes dizziness, instability or increasing pain.

Gait analysis is generally a planned assessment, not an emergency test. Seek urgent care instead for sudden inability to walk, new one-sided weakness, facial drooping, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or a painful limb that is cold or changing colour.

Arrange a clinical review for progressive limping, repeated falls, worsening pain or a noticeable decline in walking distance. The clinician can decide whether gait testing, imaging or another assessment is the appropriate next step.

Ask which findings relate to your symptoms, which are harmless variations, and how the results alter treatment. Request clear goals for exercises, footwear or an orthotic trial, plus a way to judge improvement before repeating the analysis.
