What should you know about bruising easily hypothyroidism?

Short answer
Easy bruising is not specific to hypothyroidism, so persistent or unexplained bruises should be assessed alongside other symptoms and medicines.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What bruising shows
- A bruise reflects bleeding under the skin, not one specific diagnosis.
- Associated symptoms
- Fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation and weakness may guide assessment.
- Medication review
- Medicines and supplements can affect bruising risk.
Understanding the possible link
Bruises form when small blood vessels leak under the skin after an impact, sometimes one that was barely noticed. Medicines, supplements, skin changes, nutrition problems, platelet or clotting conditions, and liver disease can all contribute. An underactive thyroid may be considered when bruising occurs with a wider pattern of symptoms, but a bruise cannot diagnose hypothyroidism.
Other features that can occur with hypothyroidism include fatigue, daytime sleepiness, cold intolerance, cold hands and feet, constipation, hoarse voice or generalised weakness. Symptoms vary, and several other conditions can produce the same pattern. A clinician may review your history, examine the skin and request blood tests.
Steps to take
Keep a simple record of when bruises appear, where they are, whether they follow minor knocks, and whether they are becoming more frequent. Bring a list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter pain relievers and supplements; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Protect the skin from knocks and seek assessment if bruising persists or has no clear explanation.
Mention nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusually heavy periods, prolonged bleeding from small cuts, fatigue or cold symptoms. If hypothyroidism is confirmed, follow the treatment and monitoring plan provided by your clinician.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical appointment for repeated unexplained bruises, bruises that are large or painful, or bruising with other bleeding. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting blood, black stools, severe headache after an injury, fainting or sudden weakness.
Questions to bring
Ask whether your symptoms warrant thyroid and blood-count testing, whether any medicine or supplement could contribute, and which bleeding signs need urgent attention. Ask when results should be reviewed and what changes would justify earlier contact.
