Brown spots under the eyes

The under-eye area is thin and can show pigment, small blood vessels, or shadows from hollows and swelling. Rubbing from eczema, allergies, contact irritation, or makeup can deepen colour over time. Sun exposure may add pigment, while dehydration or tiredness can make shadows more noticeable without creating a true spot. A clinician checks whether the colour is on the surface, affects both sides, has scale or rash, or is associated with swelling, pain, or vision symptoms.

Avoid rubbing and remove makeup with a fragrance-free, non-scrubbing cleanser. Stop a product that burns or causes a rash, use a bland moisturiser suitable for the eye area, and wear sunglasses and sun protection around—but not in—the eyes. Do not apply strong acids, bleaching products, or steroid creams near the eyelids without medical advice. A dermatologist or eye clinician can identify the cause and suggest an appropriate option.

Arrange a prompt review if the mark is new, one-sided, spreading, raised, scaly, bleeding, or accompanied by persistent itch. Seek urgent care for sudden eye pain, marked swelling, vision change, severe redness, injury, or discharge. These symptoms may involve the eye itself rather than skin pigment alone.

Ask whether the colour is pigment, irritation, or shadowing; whether an allergy or product is involved; what can safely be used near the eyelid; and whether an eye examination is needed.
