Penile skin can naturally vary in colour, and harmless pigment marks may be flat and stable. Friction, shaving, dermatitis, a healed sore, or inflammation can also leave darker skin. Some infections and other lesions require specific treatment, so colour alone cannot provide the answer. Note whether the area is flat or raised and whether there is itching, scaling, discharge, ulceration, or a change in the nearby skin.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid picking, vigorous rubbing, home acids, bleaching products, and unprescribed steroid or antifungal creams. Pause shaving and avoid sexual contact if the spot is sore, open, blistered, or accompanied by discharge until a clinician has advised you. A sexual-health or dermatology clinician can examine the area discreetly and arrange testing when indicated.

Arrange an appointment for a spot that is new, enlarging, uneven, multicoloured, raised, scaly, or repeatedly itchy. Seek prompt care for bleeding, an ulcer, blisters, pus, severe pain, swelling, fever, or difficulty passing urine. Tell the clinician about recent sexual contact, new products, friction, shaving, and any medicines; these details help focus the examination.
