Brown Spots on the Arm

A flat brown mark may be leftover pigment after a bite, rash, scrape, burn, or inflamed hair follicle. Sun-exposed arms can also develop pigment spots over time. Marks that are scaly, raised, rough, ring-shaped, or clustered with active bumps may represent a different skin problem. Colour, edge, texture, duration, and whether the spot is changing are more useful than the word brown alone.

Protect exposed arms with clothing, shade, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Wash gently and moisturise if the skin is dry. Do not scratch, pick, burn, or apply strong bleaching products to an unidentified mark. Take a well-lit photograph beside a ruler-free familiar object for comparison, and record when you first noticed it, any preceding injury or rash, and whether it is spreading. A clinician can then decide whether observation, treatment, or testing is appropriate.

Arrange a skin examination when a spot changes in colour, outline, size, or height, develops several shades, or looks unlike your other marks. Seek prompt care for bleeding without clear injury, repeated crusting, persistent pain, marked swelling, or a sore that does not heal. Fever or rapidly spreading redness also needs timely medical attention.

Ask what features support post-inflammatory pigmentation, whether the spot needs dermatoscopic examination, and how to protect it outdoors. If treatment is considered, ask about irritation, expected colour changes, and what to do if the mark returns.
