Brown Spots on the Forehead from Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet light can activate pigment production, leaving tan, brown, or grey-brown flat areas on exposed skin. Forehead marks may be even in colour and appear in more than one nearby area, sometimes alongside other sun-exposed changes. A rough or gritty patch is different from a smooth dark macule and should be assessed. Location alone cannot identify the cause.

Wear a hat, seek shade, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the forehead and hairline. Reapply as directed when outdoors or sweating. Keep cleansing gentle and avoid scratching or peeling the spots. Photograph the area in similar lighting and note whether a mark becomes darker, wider, raised, scaly, or irritated. A dermatologist can discuss prescription creams or procedures after confirming the diagnosis and your skin’s tendency to darken after inflammation.

Book an appointment for a mark that is new and persistent, has an uneven outline or several colours, or changes in size, shape, texture, or sensation. Seek prompt medical care if it bleeds, forms a persistent crust, hurts, or fails to heal. These features do not identify a diagnosis by themselves, but they are reasons not to rely on home lightening treatments.
