Brown Spots in Hands: What They May Mean

Brown spots in the hands often reflect pigment changes, but a new or changing mark deserves a closer look. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Colour, shape, texture, timing, and whether one or several areas are involved all help a clinician assess it.

Flat tan or brown marks may develop after repeated light exposure or after inflammation, a cut, burn, or rash has settled. Dry, thickened, scaly, bleeding, tender, or raised areas need a different assessment. A spot under or around a nail should also be examined if its pigment changes or extends onto nearby skin. An examination can separate harmless pigmentation from conditions that need treatment.

Take a clear photograph in good light and note when the mark appeared. Use broad-spectrum sun protection on exposed hands, reapply when outdoors, and consider gloves for prolonged outdoor work. Avoid scraping, bleaching, or using strong home peels, since irritation can deepen pigmentation. A dermatologist may recommend observation, a prescription, or a procedure after identifying the cause.

Arrange a prompt skin assessment if a mark grows, develops uneven shades or edges, becomes raised, crusted, painful, or bleeds without clear injury. Seek advice sooner for a changing nail mark or a sore that does not settle. These signs do not diagnose a serious condition, but they make direct examination important.

Ask what features support the likely diagnosis, whether the spot should be photographed or monitored, which products could irritate it, and what treatment is appropriate for your skin tone and daily sun exposure.
