Brown spots around the eyes: what they may mean

Flat, even-toned patches can develop after rubbing, eczema-like irritation, or repeated sun exposure. A spot that is raised, scaly, bleeding, very itchy, or different from nearby marks needs a closer look. Pimples or inflamed follicles can also leave darker marks after they settle; related possibilities include Acne, Folliculitis, and Rosacea. The thin skin around the eyes is easily irritated by fragranced products, makeup, and vigorous cleansing.

Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansing and avoid rubbing or picking. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen around, but not directly into, the eyes, and use sunglasses outdoors. Stop any new product that stings. Do not apply strong lightening products, acids, or steroid creams close to the eyelids without professional guidance. A clinician can decide whether observation, prescription treatment, or a procedure such as LED Light Therapy is appropriate.

Arrange a dermatology review if a mark changes in size, shape, colour, or texture, or if it repeatedly crusts, bleeds, hurts, or becomes swollen. Seek prompt care for sudden eyelid swelling with eye pain, vision change, or marked redness. Bring a list of products used near the area and, if possible, older photographs to show how the mark has evolved.
