What should you know about brown skin freckles?

Freckles, also called ephelides, often appear on sun-exposed skin such as the face, shoulders, chest, and arms. They may be more noticeable after time outdoors and lighter during periods with less sun exposure. Freckles are usually flat rather than raised, and several may occur in a similar pattern. A new dark mark is not automatically a freckle, however; sun spots, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and moles can look different and need separate assessment.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, reapply as directed on the product, and add shade, clothing, and a hat when outdoors. Avoid picking or irritating nearby skin, because inflammation can leave darker marks. Photographing the area in consistent lighting can help you describe changes, but a photograph cannot replace an examination.

Ask whether the mark looks like a freckle or another type of pigmentation, whether it needs monitoring, and which sunscreen and treatment approach fit your skin. Ask what temporary darkening, lightening, irritation, or blistering could occur after a procedure and how to protect the area afterward.
