What should you know about bronchiolitis cause?

The illness often starts like a cold, with a runny nose and cough. As the infection affects the narrow air passages deeper in the lungs, their lining swells and mucus collects. Because these passages are small in young children, even modest narrowing can make breathing and feeding more tiring. Bronchiolitis is different from asthma, although the symptoms can sound similar. A cough, fever, or wheeze is a presentation of bronchiolitis, not proof that the symptom itself is the diagnosis.

Most care is supportive: keep the child comfortable, offer fluids or milk in manageable amounts, and clear nasal congestion gently. Wash hands before contact and avoid sharing cups, towels, or utensils with other children. Keep smoke away from the child. A clinician can listen to the chest and check hydration and breathing effort when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are worsening.

Seek urgent help if breathing includes long pauses, pronounced pulling in of the chest, grunting, or a blue-grey colour around the mouth. Arrange medical assessment if the child is drinking much less, has fewer wet nappies, becomes unusually sleepy, or is worsening after seeming stable. Fever with a very unwell appearance also deserves prompt attention.
