What bronchiectasis may look like on an X-ray

A chest X-ray creates an image of the chest and may help identify infection, areas of collapse, or other explanations for a cough. Bronchiectasis-related airway changes may be subtle, and the image is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and previous records. The appearance does not automatically explain how often symptoms occur or how much support a person needs.

If bronchiectasis remains a concern, the clinician may discuss more detailed imaging or breathing assessment. [Spirometry](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/spirometry/) measures airflow and can add information, although it does not replace clinical interpretation.

Ask the clinician to explain whether the report suggests bronchiectasis, another condition, or no clear abnormality, and what follow-up matches your symptoms. Bring a record of [Cough](/symptoms/cough/) duration, phlegm, infections, fever and breathlessness. Do not treat an X-ray phrase as a diagnosis without the full clinical review.

An imaging appointment should not delay urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or significant coughing of blood. Seek prompt clinical advice if fever, chest pain, breathlessness or phlegm is worsening.

Ask what the X-ray actually shows, whether further imaging is needed, whether spirometry is suitable, and which symptoms should lead to urgent reassessment.
