What should you know about broken Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a flexible rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. A bend, crack or break can change how it feels and may make removal more difficult. Do not try to straighten, massage, cut or remove it yourself. A clinician may examine the arm and arrange imaging if the rod cannot be felt clearly or its location is uncertain.

A damaged rod does not automatically explain every symptom. Changes in bleeding, arm discomfort, bruising or tingling can have several causes. The clinician will also review when the implant was inserted, any injury to the arm, medicines you take and whether you have had sex without another contraceptive method.

Contact the clinic that inserted the implant or another qualified healthcare professional. Until you receive advice about whether the implant is still working, use condoms or avoid sex that could lead to pregnancy. Bring the implant record if you have it, and note any change in shape, pain, swelling, numbness or bleeding.

If removal is advised, the clinician can discuss local anaesthetic, a small procedure and another contraceptive plan. Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening arm pain, marked swelling, loss of feeling or movement, heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain or trouble breathing. Seek prompt assessment if the rod has come through the skin, the wound is red or draining, or you may be pregnant while the implant's position or function is uncertain.

Ask whether the rod can be felt and whether imaging is needed; whether you should use backup contraception; how a damaged implant would be removed; and which replacement method fits your medical history.
