Bovine mastitis and human breast symptoms

The word bovine refers to cattle. Bovine mastitis is therefore a veterinary condition and is not the name of a human breast disorder. People can develop mastitis, meaning inflammation of breast tissue, particularly during breastfeeding, but the causes, examinations, medicines, and dosing decisions belong to human healthcare.

Human mastitis can present with a tender, warm, swollen, or reddened area of one breast. Fever, chills, aching, or fatigue may accompany the local symptoms. Breast pain alone has several possible explanations, so its presence does not establish mastitis.

If you are breastfeeding, continue feeding or expressing in a comfortable way unless your clinician advises otherwise. Avoid forceful massage, excessive pumping, or repeatedly trying to empty the breast, because extra stimulation and pressure can worsen swelling. A cool compress and a supportive, non-restrictive bra may ease discomfort.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain, redness, swelling, or flu-like illness is developing. A clinician can distinguish inflammation from an abscess or another breast problem and decide whether an antibiotic is appropriate. Never use veterinary antibiotics or medicine intended for an animal.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with a painful red or swollen breast, rapidly worsening symptoms, pus or bloody discharge, or a new tender lump. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if you feel faint, confused, very weak, short of breath, or unable to keep fluids down. A lump that remains after inflammation settles also needs examination.

Ask whether your symptoms fit inflammatory mastitis, bacterial mastitis, an abscess, or another cause of breast pain. If you are lactating, discuss comfortable feeding positions, whether milk removal needs adjustment, which pain relief is suitable for you, and what change should trigger reassessment.
