Both sides of the nose blocked: what to know

A common cold can cause congestion with sneezing, a sore throat, or cough. Allergic rhinitis may bring repeated sneezing, clear discharge, and itchy eyes after exposure to triggers such as pollen or dust mites. Sinus inflammation can add facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick mucus. Persistent nighttime blockage may contribute to mouth breathing and can occur alongside obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms such as loud snoring or pauses noticed during sleep.

Drink fluids, rest, and use a saline spray or rinse as directed. Avoid smoke and known irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication or another treatment is suitable; follow the label and do not combine products with duplicate ingredients. Decongestant nasal sprays should not be used beyond the recommended short period because congestion can rebound.

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, confusion, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Arrange medical advice for blockage lasting beyond a typical cold, repeated episodes, high fever, severe facial pain, vision changes, or discharge that is bloody or foul-smelling.

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergy, sinus disease, medication rebound, or a structural problem; which spray or medicine is appropriate; and whether your sleep quality or snoring needs assessment.
