What should you know about botched hysterectomy?

Some discomfort, tiredness and light vaginal discharge can occur during recovery, while infection, bleeding, a blood clot, injury to nearby organs, wound problems or pelvic-floor symptoms require different responses. A clinician needs the operation details, symptom pattern and examination findings to identify the cause.

A difficult recovery does not by itself prove that the operation was performed incorrectly. Symptoms may relate to healing, infection, medication, anaesthesia, scar tissue, bladder or bowel function, the vaginal cuff, or the condition that led to surgery.

Useful details include whether the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes were removed, whether surgery was abdominal, vaginal or keyhole, and whether a complication was documented. These facts help another clinician interpret pain, bleeding, hormonal symptoms or urinary changes.

Contact the operating team or a gynaecologist and describe when each symptom began, whether it is improving, and what makes it worse. Bring the discharge summary, operation report, pathology result and current medicines if available. The review may include examination, urine or blood testing, or imaging chosen for the suspected problem.

Follow wound, lifting and sexual-activity instructions until reviewed. Do not insert anything vaginally or resume strenuous activity earlier than advised. If communication with the original team has broken down, request an independent gynaecology opinion and copies of your medical records.

Seek urgent care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or rapidly worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, fever with feeling very unwell, foul-smelling discharge, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, a swollen painful leg, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or a wound that opens or drains pus.

Use emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or uncontrolled bleeding. These warning signs warrant assessment regardless of whether the surgery was recent or recovery had seemed settled.

Ask exactly which organs were removed, whether the operative note records a difficulty, what diagnosis could explain the current symptoms, and which test would change treatment. Clarify the recovery restrictions, pain-control plan, expected follow-up and who to contact if symptoms worsen.
