What to know about a bone PET scan

It can help the clinical team investigate whether cancer involves bone, assess unclear findings, or plan follow-up. The images show patterns of activity rather than giving a diagnosis by themselves.

A radiotracer is given before imaging and travels through the body. The scanner detects where it collects. Areas with increased activity may reflect tumour, inflammation, infection, healing, arthritis, or another bone process, so the pattern must be interpreted alongside your history and other imaging.

Some examinations combine PET with CT. PET maps biological activity, while CT adds anatomical detail so the radiologist can locate a finding more precisely. A report may describe an area as active, indeterminate, or not concerning in context; none of these terms should be interpreted without the full report.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about food, drinks, medicines, and physical activity because preparation depends on the tracer and scan protocol. Tell the team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have diabetes, or have difficulty lying still. Bring earlier scans and a current medicine list if requested.

After the injection, there is usually a quiet waiting period while the tracer circulates. During imaging, you lie on a moving table and need to keep still. Unless your team gives different advice, drinking water afterward can help clear the tracer through urine. Ask when and how you will receive the report.

Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop swelling, spreading redness, marked pain, breathing difficulty, or feel faint after the injection. Severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening swelling requires emergency care.

Separate from the scan itself, new weakness or numbness in the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with neurological changes needs urgent assessment because pressure on nerves around the spine must be excluded.

Ask which tracer and scanner will be used, what question the test is intended to answer, whether any medicines need adjusting, and how this scan compares with your earlier imaging. You can also ask what an unclear result would lead to, who will explain the findings, and whether another test may be needed before treatment decisions are made.
