What is a bone density scan called?

DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The scan uses two low-dose X-ray beams to compare how much radiation passes through bone and soft tissue. It commonly assesses the hip and lower spine, where reduced density can affect fracture risk. The result is interpreted alongside your age, medical history, medicines and any previous fractures; it is not a complete picture of bone health by itself.

Ask the clinician who requested the test which body areas will be assessed and whether any medicines or supplements need special instructions. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie still comfortably. The scan itself is not an emergency test. Seek prompt medical advice after a fall or injury that causes severe pain, inability to bear weight, a new deformity, or sudden back pain. Arrange a routine review if a result shows reduced density, because the next step may include fracture-risk assessment, nutrition and activity advice, or treatment.
