What should you know about boils on butt?

A boil starts around an infected hair follicle and may become a red, warm, swollen and painful lump. Pus can collect beneath the skin, creating a softer centre. Boils may appear on the face, neck, trunk, arms, legs or buttocks, especially where sweat, shaving or rubbing irritates follicles. Multiple lumps or repeated episodes deserve assessment because a simple boil is not the only explanation for skin lumps.

Apply a clean warm compress and wash the surrounding skin gently. Avoid squeezing, cutting or repeatedly touching the area. Use a clean dressing if it opens, wash hands after changing it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing or razors. Reduce rubbing with loose clothing. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics for skin infection or recommend abscess drainage when examination shows that a collection needs it.

Have the boil assessed if it is large, increasingly painful, recurrent or slow to improve. Prompt advice is needed when redness spreads, fever or chills occur, red streaks appear, several boils develop, or the lesion is near the eye or genital area. Seek earlier help if diabetes or reduced immunity is present. Rapid progression or feeling severely unwell calls for urgent care.
