What should you know about boils in groin area?

Boils are painful skin infections that often start around a hair follicle. A firm red bump may become warmer, larger and softer in the middle as pus forms. The groin area has hair, moisture and frequent skin contact, so rubbing from clothing or exercise can aggravate an existing boil. A lump can have other causes, however, and its location alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Use a clean warm compress without pressing on the swelling. Wash gently, pat dry and choose loose clothing that limits rubbing. Pause shaving, waxing and strenuous activity that repeatedly irritates the area. Never lance or squeeze the lump. If it drains, place a clean dressing over it, change the dressing when damp and wash your hands before and after care. Medical treatment may include antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage, depending on examination findings.

Contact a clinician when pain or swelling is increasing, the boil keeps coming back, or the area is not improving. Prompt assessment is needed for spreading redness, fever, chills, red streaks, difficulty moving, or swelling near the genitals. Ask for earlier advice if you are pregnant or have diabetes or a condition that weakens immunity. Seek urgent care if you feel seriously unwell or the skin changes progress quickly.
