What should you know about body sweating a lot?

Short answer
Body sweating a lot can result from heat, activity, medicines, hormonal changes, infection, or another health condition, so the timing and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Night sweats are episodes of heavy sweating during sleep that soak clothing or bedding even when the room is cool. A warm room, thick bedding, alcohol, spicy food, anxiety, or exercise late in the day can cause temporary sweating. Repeated episodes deserve attention, particularly when they are new or interfere with sleep.
What heavy or night sweating can mean
The pattern helps a clinician narrow the possibilities. Sweating with a fever, chills, cough, diarrhoea, or feeling generally unwell can occur with an infection such as glandular fever, brucellosis, or HIV infection. Sweating with a racing heartbeat, shakiness, heat intolerance, or weight loss can occur with hyperthyroidism.
Hot flushes and night sweats can accompany menopause. Less commonly, persistent sweating with unexplained weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, marked tiredness, or easy bruising may occur with lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, or chronic myeloid leukaemia. These symptoms do not identify a diagnosis by themselves; many benign causes are possible.
What you can do now
Keep the bedroom cool, choose light sleepwear, and use breathable bedding. Note when sweating happens, whether it wakes you, how wet the clothing or bedding becomes, and any fever, pain, cough, palpitations, bowel changes, or weight change.
Review recent changes such as a new medicine, dose adjustment, alcohol use, recreational drugs, illness, stress, or menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Arrange a routine appointment if episodes keep returning, have no clear trigger, or are affecting sleep or daily activities.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for heavy sweating with chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, confusion, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for sweating with a persistent high fever, severe weakness, or rapid unexplained deterioration.
Book a medical review for repeated night sweats, especially if they occur with unexplained weight loss, a persistent cough, swollen glands, ongoing fever, unusual bruising, or significant fatigue. A clinician may examine you and decide whether blood tests or other checks are useful based on the full pattern.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What might explain the timing and amount of my sweating? Could any of my medicines or supplements contribute? Which symptoms should prompt urgent help? Do I need an examination or tests, and what should I record before my next appointment?

Questions people ask
Does sweating at night always mean something serious?
No. Room temperature, bedding, alcohol, medicines, stress, hormonal changes, and short-lived illnesses can all contribute. Repeated or unexplained episodes should still be assessed, particularly when other symptoms are present.
What information should I bring to an appointment?
Record when the sweating occurs, whether it soaks clothing or bedding, possible triggers, recent medicines or dose changes, and symptoms such as fever, cough, palpitations, weight change, or swollen glands.
Can menopause cause heavy sweating during sleep?
Yes. Menopause can cause hot flushes and night sweats. A clinician can discuss symptom relief and check other possible explanations when the pattern is new, severe, or unusual for you.
