Blue fingernails and dehydration: what to know

Dehydration commonly causes thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness and darker urine. Blue nail beds can instead reflect cold exposure, reduced blood flow or a problem affecting oxygen delivery. If vomiting or diarrhoea caused fluid loss, Gastroenteritis may be relevant; heat exposure can lead to Heat Exhaustion. Dark urine can support dehydration, but it does not explain blue nails by itself.

Warm your hands gradually, remove dark nail polish, and check whether the colour is in the nail beds or only beneath a bruise. Sip an oral rehydration drink or water if you are awake and able to drink, especially after fluid loss. Do not force fluids if you are vomiting repeatedly. Arrange same-day medical advice if the blue colour does not settle after warming or affects several nails.

Call emergency services for blue nails with trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or blue lips or tongue. Seek urgent assessment for a sudden change, severe dehydration signs such as very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. A clinician can check oxygen, circulation and the cause of fluid loss.
