Blood while coughing: what to know

The source may be the nose, throat, or lower airways. A forceful cough, acute bronchitis, or an irritated throat can leave streaks in mucus. Asthma, bronchiectasis, acid reflux, and other conditions may also be involved. Blood mixed with mucus is different from blood vomited from the stomach, so explain what happened immediately before it appeared.

Arrange medical advice for new blood while coughing and keep a record of the colour, amount, frequency, and associated symptoms. Avoid smoke and strenuous activity. Bring every medicine list, including medicines that affect clotting. Do not use a relative’s cough medicine or delay assessment to see whether the bleeding returns.

Get emergency help if bleeding continues, the amount is more than a small streak, or you have shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, confusion, blue lips, or severe weakness. A rapidly worsening cough with fever also needs urgent review. Sit upright and do not drive if light-headed.

Ask where the blood most likely came from, whether you need a chest examination or further tests, and which warning signs mean emergency care. Tell the clinician if this has happened before or if you take clot-affecting medicine.
