What should you know about a blood test GTT?

A sample is usually taken before the drink and another after a set interval. The results show how quickly glucose leaves the bloodstream. A result outside the laboratory's reference range does not diagnose a condition by itself; your clinician considers symptoms, medicines, preparation, and other results.

Follow the testing centre's instructions about fasting, water, medicines, and activity. During the test, remain seated, avoid eating, and tell staff if you feel nauseated, shaky, sweaty, faint, or unwell. Ask whether medicines or an illness could affect the reading before changing anything.

Contact the clinician who ordered the test if you have repeated thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight change, marked tiredness, or blurred vision. Seek urgent help for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, or difficulty staying awake, especially with vomiting or inability to keep fluids down.

Ask which GTT schedule was used, whether you needed to fast, how your values compare with the laboratory range, and whether repeat testing or another test is appropriate.
